Keeping Wi-Fi always on, on Windows Mobile devices

I was at a coffeehouse yesterday and I observed the waiters with those PDA's. Once they switched them on, they could take an order, which implies that their PDA's wi-fi connection was enabled even when the device was in standby mode. A bit dissapointed that both my HTC Touch and my Mio P560 would turn off their wi-fi connection upon entering standby, I decided to get to the bottom of this. And I did!

The solution to have "always on" wi-fi, is applying three registry hacks. Please note that you must apply all three registry edits and soft reset your device before this takes effect. If you're looking for a free and reliable registry editor for your Windows Mobile device, you can take a look at the PHM Registry Editor.

The necessary registry edits are:

  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} - change to 1
  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\State\Resuming\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} change to 1
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\State\Unattended\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} change to 1

Now the wi-fi connection will stay on even while your device is suspended. Remember that you'll have to re-enable the wi-fi connection if you soft-reset your device, though.

    Hi Yanni,

I have the same device nowadays and yes, it doesn't work. It stopped working with Windows Mobile 2005. Your device is using WinMo 6 and, yes, this trick no longer works :(

This post is relevant to Windows Mobile (used in smartphones), not WIndows 7 (used in desktops). Windows Mobile has to do with Windows 7 as much as a cabbage has to do with a tomato.

Would this work for a Dell Windows 7 laptop as well? Even after changing power management for the wifi card, and not letting Windows go into sleep mode, it still turns off. I want to be able to always control it remotely without having to run a network cable to it (lives on a desk, plugged into power). My computer doesn't have those keys in the registry, so can I just add them, or is it somewhere else in Win7? (Doesn't have the whole Power section of the path, if I remember correctly - can't get to it from this XP desktop currently)
